Causes of Brain Injury

There are few injuries as debilitating and expensive to care for as brain injuries. Even worse, many brain injuries do not manifest immediate symptoms; rather, they reveal themselves over time, often after irreparable damage has taken place. Depending on the severity of the injury, brain injury victims can face years, decades, or even a lifetime of compromised motor, function, and cognitive skills, with the worst cases resulting in coma or death. Tragically, as our Oklahoma City personal injury lawyers can attest, too many brain injuries are the result of accidents and could have been avoided if not for the negligent or deliberately wrongful actions of another party.

If you or a member of your family has suffered a brain injury in an accident for which someone else was at fault, you have rights. You may be entitled to compensation for your medical costs, rehabilitation expenses, lost wages, pain and suffering, and other losses and expenses related to your injury. The Oklahoma City brain injury attorneys of Nix Law Group are experts in the litigation of brain injury claims, regardless of the cause of the injury, and would be pleased to evaluate your case and advise you of your legal rights and options.

Common Causes of Traumatic Brain Injuries

There are two basic types of brain injuries: penetrating and closed head. Penetrating injuries occur when an object, such as a bullet, penetrates the skull and enters the brain. Closed head brain injuries occur when the head suffers a blow, causing the brain to strike the skull from within. Both types of brain injuries can have severe, life-threatening consequences; however, closed head brain injuries may not exhibit obvious symptoms at first and, therefore, may be more difficult to diagnose.

Common accidents that result in brain injuries include car, truck, and motorcycle accidents; on-the-job accidents, particularly at hazardous work environments such as construction sites; hospital mistakes, surgical errors, pharmaceutical errors, and other incidents of medical malpractice; premises liability accidents, such as slip-and-fall and trip-and-fall accidents; accidents involving defective products, such as faulty automotive products; and obstetrical errors that result in brain-related birth injuries.

Of these accidents, construction accidents and premises liability accidents are most likely to result in penetrating brain injuries. For example, if a person is assaulted in the parking lot of a store that failed to provide adequate security and suffers a gunshot wound to the head as a result, the owner of the property may be held fully or partially liable for the resulting costs related to the accident.

Accidents resulting in closed head injuries can be particularly devastating because victims may believe themselves to be perfectly fine and, therefore, not seek the medical treatment they desperately but unknowingly need. This is why it is essential always to seek medical care after an accident, even if you think you are not injured. It is also essential that you contact a personal injury attorney so that you understand your rights and options, even if you ultimately choose not to pursue litigation.
