Late-night Lawton hit-and-run collision claims pedestrian's life

Every driver in Oklahoma is required to be cautious when traveling on streets and highways. So is every pedestrian when traveling streets where cars and trucks and other vehicles travel. Unfortunately, even when a pedestrian is careful, he or she can be injured or killed by a driver who is not.

In Lawton recently, a car accident ended the life of a 57-year-old man walking along a city street shortly after midnight. Police say the man was walking on the side of the street with a companion who was walking on grass just off the street at Cache Road when a pickup truck hit the victim.

The man was taken to the hospital where he was later pronounced dead. The driver of the pickup truck fled from the scene of the fatal car crash. Police said the vehicle, make and model not yet known, was last seen traveling east on Cache Road.

The investigation into the fatal accident is ongoing. Police are gathering evidence in addition to contacting businesses on Cache Road that might have video surveillance that could help them determine the cause of the crash and the identity of the hit-and-run driver.

Any driver involved in a motor vehicle has the obligation to stop at the scene if safe to do so and report the incident to authorities, whether or not the driver has caused the crash. Any driver who fails to do so can be considered negligent, which can lead to criminal charges and legal liabilities.

A wrongful death lawsuit may help the family receive some sense of justice in addition to compensation that may cover medical expenses, or in the tragic event of the victim's death, funeral expenses.
