Spinal Cord Injury Statistics

According to the American Association of Neurological Surgeons (AANS), an estimated 250,000 to 450,000 people in the United States are living with a spinal cord injury (SCI). Every year an estimated 11,000 spinal cord injuries occur in the country.  Most of these are caused by trauma to the vertebral column, which can affect the spinal cord's ability to send and receive information between the brain and body’s systems that control sensory, motor, and autonomic function below the level of injury.  According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), spinal cord injuries cost the nation an estimated $9.7 billion each year.  While recent advances in urgent care and rehabilitation allow many spinal cord injury patients to survive, methods for reducing the extent of injury and for restoring function are still limited. 

What Causes Brain and Spinal Cord Injuries?

Unfortunately, and tragically, these brain, spine and neurological injuries are often the result of an accident caused by a negligent or careless person - accidents such as automobile accidents, car wrecks, commercial trucking accidents, ATV accidents, motorcycle accidents, medical malpractice, hospital mistakes, birth injuries, unsafe products, workplace accidents or other serious accidents.  In fact, the leading cause of severe brain and spinal cord injury in the United States is motor vehicle accidents.  The incidence of spinal cord injury is highest among the 16-30 year old age group, with males representing 81 percent of all reported cases.
