What Is Xarelto?

The oral medication Xarelto (rivaroxaban) is an anticoagulant developed by Bayer and Janssen Pharmaceuticals to prevent blood clots from forming and obstructing vital blood flow to the organs. The blood thinner was approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 2011 to reduce the risk of blood clots in patients who undergo knee or hip replacement surgery, to treat pulmonary embolism and deep vein thrombosis, and to reduce the risk of stroke in patients diagnosed with atrial fibrillation.

Potentially Deadly Side Effects

Unlike other anticoagulant medications, the blood-thinning effects of Xarelto cannot be reversed by vitamin K. In fact, there is no known antidote for the drug. Therefore, patients taking Xarelto are at a higher risk for the following dangerous and potentially irreversible side effects:

  • Internal and gastrointestinal bleeding
  • Hemorrhage
  • Abnormal liver function
  • Reduced platelet levels
  • Spinal clotting
  • Bruising

If you or a loved one experiences the harmful side effects of Xarelto, contact your medical provider immediately.

Xarelto Lawsuits

Despite there being no known antidote for the effects of Xarelto, the pharmaceutical manufacturers marketed the drug as a superior alternative to other anticoagulants. Pharmaceutical companies are obligated not only to ensure that their products are reasonably safe for use, but also to warn others about potential risks.

Patients that have suffered the deadly effects of Xarelto or families that have lost loved ones due to the defective medication have taken legal action against Bayer and Janssen, arguing the manufacturers failed to warn about the serious risks of taking the blood thinner, did not advise doctors on how to intervene or stabilize Xarelto patients, and put their own profits ahead of public safety.
