NTSB releases development in truck-bus accident

There has been a development in the investigation of the California commercial vehicle accident that stunned many Americans, including those in Oklahoma City. Federal transportation officials, including the National Transportation Safety Board, have led the investigation in order to determine the potential cause of the fiery bus crash and to improve commercial vehicle safety.

Based on a one-page document, the NTSB stated that they have more information about the collision but not the cause of the fatal accident. The federal officials stated that the FedEx tractor -trailer was traveling in the right lane when it swerved into the median. After that, the truck, pulling two 28-foot trailers, drove through bushes and entered the northbound traffic lanes of I-5 in California, where the incident occurred.

The truck hit the rear of a 2013 Nissan Altima, and then struck the bus, which was carrying 43 high school students and three chaperones at the time. Both drivers died.

The fatal truck-bus accident also ended the life of five high school students who were supposed to tour Humboldt State University. The family of one of these students has decided to file a wrongful death lawsuit on behalf of their 17-year-old daughter.

Additionally, a personal injury lawsuit has named Silverado Stages, a bus company, and FedEx as defendants. The lawsuit was filed on behalf of a student who survived the fatal fiery truck-bus accident.

For bus operators and trucking companies, safety should be a great concern because any collision with a truck and bus can be catastrophic for the victims. Any safety issue that contributes to the accident may result in the potential liability of commercial vehicle operators.

In this case, Oklahoma residents should take note that a personal injury lawsuit may possibly reimburse the survivors of a truck-bus accident for their medical bills, lost wages and other damages. A wrongful death lawsuit, on the other hand, may help compensate a family for their financial and emotional losses.
