Standing With You

Roads and highways can be dangerous places when careless or reckless drivers are present, whether in Oklahoma or elsewhere in the country. Unfortunately, sometimes, these drivers are involved in fatal accidents because they disregard their basic responsibilities. When such negligence is a contributing factor to someone’s death, surviving family members are left with the pain of loss, as well as anger from knowing the death was avoidable.

One family of a 79-year-old man who was killed crossing the street is probably experiencing a mixture of grief and outrage. Fortunately, the person allegedly responsible for the man’s death has been arrested by Oklahoma City police. The accused was charged with four felony counts of manslaughter, leaving the scene of a deadly accident and driving without a license or insurance.

According to police, the 21-year-old driver hit the victim, who was crossing the street, apparently, on his way home from a local market. Witnesses say the alleged driver did not stop to render aid, but fled and was thus the subject of a city-wide search.

Three days later, he took his car to a repair shop. Someone noticed that the damage to the car matched descriptions of debris at the scene of the accident. The arrested man is being held in the Oklahoma County Jail under a $61,000 bond. Immigration and Customs Enforcement has also placed a hold on the suspect, which could mean deportation, if he is not convicted and sent to prison.

In addition to whatever criminal penalties may be enacted, if the accused is convicted, the deceased man’s family may consider a wrongful death lawsuit to receive compensation for their loss. There is no guarantee that such a lawsuit will lead to compensation, so plaintiffs who are in similar circumstances should consult with a legal professional to maximize their chances of success.
