Standing With You

Most of the time when we hear about reckless driving, we think about behaviors like speeding and swerving. In the minds of many people, road rage is in a category on its own. However, when reckless behaviors lead to heated interactions with other drivers, enraged drivers can make dangerous decisions that have deadly consequences.

A 32-year-old Albuquerque man has been charged with murder after the shooting death of a 4-year-old girl. The incident happened during a case of road rage on Albuquerque’s I-40. Witnesses to the incident say the shooter was recklessly engaging with the driver of a truck; a father who was headed home with his son, daughter, and wife all in the vehicle.

According to reports, the two vehicles were cutting each other off as they approached an exit when the 32-year-old pulled a gun and took aim at the truck hitting the little girl as she sat in the back seat. Several passersby stopped to aid the family including two nurses that cared for the little girl until emergency service personnel arrived at the scene. The 4-year-old was then transported to a local hospital where she succumbed to her injuries.

The shooter fled the scene but was apprehended the next day after an anonymous caller gave police information regarding his whereabouts. After being taken into custody, the man confessed to shooting at the truck.

When accidents take the lives of children, it is difficult for family and friends to make sense of the tragedy no matter if in New Mexico or here in Oklahoma. In this case, the loss of life was easily preventable. Reckless behavior and a complete disregard for life are what led to this horrific event. For families that lose loved ones on the road, whether from traffic accidents or enraged vengeance there is nothing that can ease the pain of loss.

Holding negligent and reckless drivers accountable for their actions is one way of protecting others. With the help of an attorney, family members can see that justice is served, and the behavior doesn’t continue.
