Don't let a car accident ruin your Independence Day fun

Those of us who live in Oklahoma look forward to Independence Day all year long. It is a time for family and friends to come together in the spirit of celebrating our freedom and independence. Few things can ruin this beloved holiday, but of the things that can, a car accident is by far the worst.

According to BACtrack, July 4 is the deadliest day of the year. This statistic comes from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) from car accident data between 2005 and 2009. The IIHS found that an average of 144 car accident fatalities occurred on Independence Day in the years studied. Sadly, 10 percent of these fatalities were teenagers.

We understand that you know how to drive and are likely a seasoned motorist. Still, we would like to remind you to be extra cautious on this year's Independence Day. Pay particular attention to the motorists with whom you share the road, and use the following tried and true tips to keep your family and friends safe.

-- Use a designated driver when attending festivities serving alcohol.

-- Remain a safe distance away from motorists who exhibit erratic or reckless driving.

-- Stop your car in a safe place and phone 911 if you suspect a motorist is driving under the influence.

-- Make sure everyone in your car wears a seat belt.

-- If hosting a celebration, help your guests get home safely.

Reducing car accidents is everyone's responsibility. Do your part to keep our state's roadways safe and accident-free during all holidays. Please read more about car accidents on our personal injury web pages.
