3 injuries that may occur when a vehicle rolls

Few types of accidents are as scary and potentially deadly as those involving a rollover. According to Consumer Reports, SUVs are the most likely kinds of cars to roll over, but any car is susceptible, if the circumstances are right.

The following are some of the most common injuries that can result from an accident in which a car rolls, either onto its side or 180 degrees onto its roof. Even in accidents where this does not occur, injuries can be serious and turn into lifelong afflictions if they are not treated properly, so it is imperative to seek medical attention after an accident, no matter how major or minor injuries seem.

1. Head and neck

A passenger's head and neck are the most vulnerable areas when a car rolls over. As the car rolls, your head and neck may be violently whipped from side to side, and the injuries that result can be dire. Whiplash is perhaps the most common of these, but in more severe cases, you may suffer injuries beyond soft tissues. In these cases, bones and ligaments might also sustain injury.

2. Abdomen area

Your abdomen area is also particularly vulnerable when you are in an accident involving rollover. If you are wearing your seatbelt, this could save your life, but it could also cause an injury to the restricted area. When a car is rolling, if the seatbelt constains you, the pressure on your abdomen can trigger bruising or harm to internal organs.

3. Upper and lower limbs

Finally, you are liable to sustain injuries to your upper and lower limbs. Arms and legs are always vulnerable when you are in an accident, and the violent motion of a rollover can put you at an even greater risk. It is important to check limbs for lacerations and bruising following any kind of car accident.
